Pelorus to the Rescue
On January 28 th, this year Pelorus Surveys received an urgent invitation to tender from the Environment Agency who required a topographical survey of the River Irwell in Salford.
The purpose of the survey was to model the extent of scouring along a stretch of the fast flowing river that had suffered a major bank slip. The area in question had previously undergone significant remediation works.
We received the order seven days later and quickly programmed the work for the following Monday, knowing the report had to be delivered within 7 days of award. The area concerned was to undergo emergency works the following week.
The original tender requested a survey of approximately 50m of river bank. However, to determine the true extent of the scour Pelorus staff extended the survey until they were satisfied the feature had been accurately mapped, an additional 50m being surveyed.
The survey required cross sections running from property boundaries through to the centreline of the river at 5m centres. In order to achieve this, Pelorus provided a four man team, experienced in both land and over water surveying. One man sat aboard an inflatable dory holding a detail pole while he was anchored to the bank by rope fed out by a further two members of the team. This enabled the remaining member of the team to take bed levels using an electronic total station established on the bank.
It is anticipated that our quick mobilisation and prompt reporting will place us in a strong position for a considerable amount of additional works required along the same stretch of river where similar problems have been encountered.
