Green Survey Solution for Wirral County Council
When Wirral County Council required a GIS (Geographical
Information Systems) Data Collection Survey to
be undertaken to position approximately 60,000
drainage gullies along 2100km of the councils
adopted highways they received an environmentally
friendly and cost effective solution from Pelorus
Surveys they couldn't refuse.
The requirement for the survey was to record
the position of each gully to an accuracy of within
1m relative to Ordnance Survey National Grid.
In addition to recording the position, the asset
type ie, storm drain, drainage channel or footpath
gully, was also to be recorded along with a unique
reference numbering system. The survey was to
be complete within a tight timescale of just 13
weeks.
Pelorus Surveys of Deeside put in their unique
offer and were subsequently awarded the work.
The team of three surveyors began going quietly
about their survey business using the latest hand
held data loggers, differential GPS back pack
systems and mountain bikes to position each and
every drainage gully in the Wirral. Mountain bikes
were chosen as the preferred mode of transport
to combat traffic congestion and minimise disruption
to traffic flow along the highways network.
The survey was rapidly and discretely completed
on time with no harmful emissions or noise and
minimum disruption to the local residents and
road using public. The survey method proved very
popular with Wirral County Council, the local
residents and the surveyors. Pelorus Surveys'
Manager Mr Mike Wilson commented "the bicycle
survey has been an enormous success with the staff
here at Pelorus and I'm sure it won't be the last
time this method is implemented".
The only down side of the project were the countless
enquiries from the local residents wondering if
the surveyors were from the T.V. Licensing Body!
