These Boots were made for Walking

In January of this year Pelorus Surveys, on the instruction of Entec UK Limited, undertook a topographical survey of approximately 12km of coastline, at Redcar Teesside. This was not a new site for Pelorus, as we were involved in the original survey for an offshore windfarm back in 2003.

The purpose of this survey was to provide level information on the foreshore that was to be used as part of a long term monitoring project required by the environmental impact assessment. A total of 30 profiles along the foreshore at intervals of approximately 500m were surveyed.

Positioning was provided by Leica SR530 RTK GPS Geodetic Receivers with the OSTN02 Model uploaded to the instrument. Theoretical start and end points were generated in order to navigate along a predetermined profile line. In 2003 Pelorus surveyed 10 Profiles using traditional total stations but using the GPS we were able to re-survey these lines to give continuity to the survey.

Following our recent purchase of a third LeicaSR530 system Pelorus Surveys were able to use two Rover units utilising a single base unit (located in a secure location). This method of working enabled two surveyors to take readings simultaneously on different parts of the beach maximising productivity. Work was limited to two hours before and after a spring low tide to allow for greater coverage of the beach.

The Survey was completed in only two tides, a considerably shorter time than the previous surveys had taken, though the staff involved wore safety Wellington boots so that they could survey that little bit extra!

A further visit is planned for later in the year.
