Newton Brook De-silting Survey

Pelorus Surveys have recently completed a topographical survey of Newton Brook on the Wirral. The purpose of the survey was to ascertain silt levels along a 1.3km stretch of the watercourse for the Environment Agency.

The survey is part of an on going campaign by the Agency's North West Region South Areas Flood Defence departments maintenance of its assets. The Survey utilised both GPS and Electronic Total Station surveying Techniques.

To use GPS on Environment Agency specified contracts, Pelorus Surveys staff require accreditation. The EA evaluate the experience and qualifications of surveyors before allowing them to conduct any works involving GPS.

During site works there were some fun and games, an angry ram took a fancy to the projects surveyor's wellies and proceeded to give chase to the rapidly retreating Englishman. Luckily the farmer (female) was at hand to rescue the not so fleet of foot, detail-pole wielding braveheart.

Despite site conditions in some areas being more awkward than anticipated (sites like this are wildly different from summer to winter!), work was completed two Days ahead of programme by using one of our Leica TCA1100 total stations as an alternative to the prescribed level and staff method. This enabled the team to collect a greater amount of data from single set ups and access areas of dense vegetation used in conjunction with a 5m pole and prism.

Since completion we have had positive feedback from the Client and as a result have won further contracts in the North West, though site inductions now contain a significant element on the perils of amorous livestock!
