GPS Equipment Purchase
The Land and Marine Survey Group has recently purchased a new state-of-the-art Global Positioning System (GPS). Our surveyors have also completed a two day intensive training course. The new GPS is a Leica 530 dual frequency system. This GPS will enable us to increase our productivity levels in the field whilst enabling measurements to be made to centimetric levels of accuracy over distances of up to 20km. The use of this GPS is particularly advantageous when surveying linear sites such as roads, pipelines and railways. This system has already been used for surveying along the M6 for the Leamington Spa Office, on the M61 for the Chester Office and is currently being used on the A77 near Glasgow for a contract run by our Newcastle Office.
The Leica 530 GPS can also be used to provide real time position and height information for hydrographic surveys enabling tidal corrections to echo sounder depths to be carried out without deployment of a tide gauge.
The Survey Group has a range of other GPS systems which have a variety of capabilities. This range includes two GPS systems that can be used to set out or co-ordinate positions to an accuracy of about 1 m. These two systems are simple to operate and can be used by any field staff after a half hour training course. |
