Soil Mechanics Strengthens Drilling Capability with safety in mind

Soil Mechanics, the UK's leading ground investigation contractor, has strengthened its plant and equipment capability to meet growing demand, with the acquisition of the latest Dando Geotec 10EH.

The new machine's state of the art design will enable the drilling operation to be undertaken with enhanced safety features.

The Geotec 10EH combines electro hydraulic, safety and torque control systems which hitherto haven't been available to ground investigation contractors.

Steve Tomlinson, Soil Mechanics' Depot and Field Services Manager, who helped Dando with the specification of the Geotec 10EH to meet Health and Safety standards comments, "The new rig will translate into some significant contractual benefits not least in the area of health and safety. It has been developed to meet new HSE regulations and minimise the risk to our workforce while still maintaining good rates of production and efficiently run drill sites. Until now, the majority of the drill-area guarding systems fitted to rotary rigs were either retro-fitted or factory added to existing machines which often restricted the drillers ability to maintain reasonable work rates."

Steve continues, "With the new developments, Dando are able to offer contractors a machine that has the safety equipment, the guarding and the interlocks, fully integrated into the control system. This safety system works in sympathy to the way the rig operative wants to work while still maintaining the highest levels of crew safety.”

The new plant will reinforce Soil Mechanics strong commitment to all aspects of ground investigation by offering wide product diversity and a clear focus on specialist drilling needs. Its hydraulic controls designed to improve drilling performance and productivity enable depths of 300 meters to be reached, ideal for water well drilling, mining and other civil engineering applications where intermediate depths need to be attained.

As well as the Geotec 10EH other recent acquisitions by Soil Mechanics include two Dando 2000's, a Dando 3000 cable tool boring rig and a track mounted Berretta T51 rotary drilling rig, representing an investment in plant alone of £350,000 in the last year.
