Soil Mechanics helps Scottish borders breath new life into rail links

Soil Mechanics is pleased to announce that it has won a £750,000 ground investigation contract from Scottish Borders Council, on behalf of the Waverley Railway Partnership, to support the regeneration of a disused rail link last used in 1969.

The reinstatement of the Waverley Railway Line, set to reopen in 2011 between Edinburgh and the Borders, will enable the area to maximise its economic and social development opportunities.  The project is viewed as one of the most important sustainable public transport proposals presented to the Scottish Parliament.

The ground investigation will take 18 weeks to complete starting at the end of April.

Soil Mechanics project leader, Keith Salt, comments, "To meet the wide variety of drilling and testing techniques, logistical challenges, land access organisation and logging requirements needed, we put together a large, multi-skilled project team with experience to cater for the many different ground types and environments that will be encountered along the 35 mile stretch of track."

Councilor David Parker, Leader of Scottish Borders Council says:

"Soil Mechanics was recognised for its ability to offer timely delivery, a solid track record in rail and adherence to environmental issues. Their borehole and testing work to check ground conditions in preparation for the main design will undoubtedly deliver benefits to the progression of the project."

This contract is one of several regeneration projects Soil Mechanics has recently been involved in which it believes will provide a key growth market for the company in the future.
