CL Voelcker commence £1.5m contract

ESGL has started work on probably its largest contract award of last year – Phase 3 of the Remediation of Lambton Coke Works. Headed by the groups environmental consultancy division, CL Voelcker, the 48 week contract was commenced in late 2006 and will run throughout much of 2007.

A history of mining, coke manufacture and heavy industry has left the 64 hectare site near Sunderland heavily contaminated and in need of clean up before it can be redeveloped with mixed housing and public open space. CLA has already been involved with earlier phases of the works where it has categorized the levels and types of contamination left across the site. It has also the negotiated the geotechnical and environmental remediation strategy with the City of Sunderland Council and the Environment Agency and these works are now underway.

Staff from CLA and the testing laboratories, TES Bretby, will be permanently based on site and provide specialist advice to Carillion the Main Contractor. CLA is responsible for validating the clean up works and ensuring compliance to the remediation strategy. Samples for this validation will be sent to TES for testing and Soil Mechanics will provide a significant tranche of geotechnical analysis and install monitoring wells on the site. ESGL are also providing an extensive array of water and atmospheric monitoring for environmental and health & safety reassurance purposes.
