Project Management of Asbestos Removal

Environmental Contamination Sciences Ltd were engaged in 2006 to supervise the removal of asbestos from Shotley Bridge Hospital in County Durham prior to its demolition to make way for a new housing estate.

The old hospital at Shotley Bridge was constructed in 1912 and first came into service treating casualties from the First World War. The hospital consists of several large buildings, served by a district heating system with pipework lagged with asbestos.

The site was unoccupied for two years prior to demolition, allowing time for the copper pipework to be looted, which had resulted in widespread contamination of the buildings from the asbestos pipe lagging. Under the supervision of ECS, the asbestos was systematically removed, allowing safe access for the contractors to dismantle the building.

Apart from the asbestos, which was consigned for disposal as special waste, all other materials from the site were re-cycled.
